What To Do When a Dog Attacks

What should I do if a dog attacks?

First, remain absolutely motionless. As with most prey animals, if the dog thinks you are dead they won’t attack. Remain in an upright position with your head down. Relax (as much as possible). Do not make eye contact with the dog. They perceive eye contact as a threat or challenge. If the dog continues to come at you place your hands over your ears and bring your elbows into your chest. This protects your ears, eyes and other vital organs in the chest area. If the dog bites you, don’t rip yourself away. This causes more damage than necessary. (Keep reading to find out why.)

60% of dog attacks are on children. So what do you do if a dog attacks your child? Try to quickly find something with which to hit the dog and redirect it’s attention from the child. If possible, grab the dog by the scruff of the next, between the adams apple and the ear. This controls the dog’s head from swinging around to bite you. If the dog is in the process of biting you DO NOT want to pull him away. This will tear huge chunks of flesh away from the child’s body. It is better to let the dog’s teeth stay in the flesh until it lets go voluntarily.
