Tips for Keeping Healthy Pets

  • When bathing your pet, never use shampoos formulated for humans. The pH is incorrect for animals. For example, dogs have an oil that is secreted by their skin and human shampoos will strip the oil from their bodies. There are dog shampoos that are tearless.

  • When a dog gets an ear infection cut open a vitamin A/D gel pill. Squeeze the liquid into the ear. Try to hold the dog for a few minutes and let the liquid travel down the ear canal. Do this three times a day until the infection is gone. And then do it a few more times just to be on the safe side. This will cure most mild ear infections. (I haven't tried this with cats yet.)

  • Don't ignore bad breath. It is estimated that 80 percent of dogs the age of three suffer from periodontal disease which is a serious deterioration of the gums and bones which support the teeth. The major symptom is bad breath. Left unchecked, this bacteria can enter the dog's bloodstream, causing infection or damage to vital organs such as the kidneys, lungs, heart or liver. That’s why dog bad breath has been the called the "Silent Killer of Pets." There are solutions you can buy to help this problem but please have your dog checked by its vet to determine if the problem exists.

  • Never leave pets in cars on warm days. My dog loves to go with me so I only go out in the cooler hours of the morning during the summer.

  • Always begin treating for fleas before flea season begins. I avoid as much medication for my pets as possible so I use a natural yeast and garlic powder. Just sprinkle it on your pets food. (It also comes in capsules.) This creates a smell (you can't smell it but fleas can!) that repells fleas. If your pet still becomes infested with fleas (my dog picked them up at the groomers) you may need to use a medication to get rid of the flea infestation. Even though I don't like medicines fleas can cause long-term damage to your pet. The adult fleas on your pet can actually cause serious medical problems -- like flea allergy dermatitis or tapeworms, and in some extreme cases, anemia.

  • If you have fleas in your home set out a pan of water at night. Turn off all lights except one lamp which you have placed on the floor by the pan of water. The fleas will jump into the water and drown. It really works! (Do this only after you are certain your pet has no more fleas.)

  • Have your pets checked for parasites. Most animals have them unless they have been treated. Homeopathy can rid your pets of parasites without giving them harmful medication.
