The pituitary gland, is an endocrine gland about the size of a pea that sits at the base of the brain. This gland secretes hormones regulating a wide variety of bodily activities, and stimulates other endocrine glands. Even though it is called the master gland, it is regulated by hormones released from the hypothalamus.
There are two sections of the pituitary gland: the anterior lobe and the posterior lobe. The function of the posterior lobe is to store oxytocin and Antidieuretic hormone. The anterior lobe actually produces several hormones including a growth hormone and endorphins.
The pituitary gland helps control the following body processes:
When the pituitary gland is not functioning correctly it will affect all the glands of the body, directly or indirectly. Your pituitary can be malfunctioning in two ways. It can be considered high, which means it is producing too much of a particular hormone. It can also be considered low, which means it is not producing enough. There are links below to both the overactive and underactive questions. Please take both tests. If you receive a high score on both high and low, it could indicate that your pituitary is in serious condition. You must seek professional help if that is the case.
