If you are fixing your meals at home, it isn't difficult to eat a healthy meal. It may take some planning, but it is doable. But what about when you go out to eat? Fast food restaurants are notoriously unhealthy. Fast food meals are higher in calories, sodium and fat, and may lack important vitamins and minerals. (Many are beginning to offer salads, which is a start.) One in four Americans eat fast food on a regular basis. It is convenient and often cheaper. But it is not the healthy choice. So how do you eat healthy when dining out?
Tips for a healthy restaurant meal:
1. Avoid the salad dressing on your salads. If you must have dressing, ask for it on the side and dip your salad into it.
2. If the portions of your entre meal is large, take 1/2 home.
3. Think about ordering double vegetables and skipping the potatoes.
4. Stay away from cream sauces.
5. Avoid sodas. Drink water instead.
6. Avoid french fries. There is nothing good about them.
7. If you must have a hamburger, order the child's size.
8. Always eat a salad before the main meal, even if the meal is a hamburger.
9. It is usually the condiments that are the least healthy options. Stay away from butter, mayonaise, cheese sause, tartar sauce, gravies, etc.
10. Avoid anything fried. The fats used in most restaurants are very unhealthy.
11. Avoid buffets. People tend to eat more when eating from a buffet. (This is my downfall.)
12. Consider ordering the food "to go". Most people eat more when dining in a restaurant. (It's easy to order more when you stay.)
