Healthy Snacks

The sugar and unhealthy carbohydrates have to go if you want to be healthy. They spike your insulin levels and offer no nutrition. There are many snacks that you can substitute. Fresh fruits are nature's best natural snack. Snacking on fresh veggies is also a good idea. Nuts (peanuts, cashews, almonds, etc.) are good sources of protein, as are boiled eggs. Dried fruit is also a good, sweet choice. Be careful and only eat a little. There is a lot of sugar compacted into a small amount of fruit. This will send your spike your insulin levels.
Make substitutions:
Yogart or soy ice cream can be substituted for regular ice cream. (Be sure to check the labels for sugar content.) If you must have ice cream, buy portion control packs. Never buy a large tub of ice cream. It's too easy to binge.
If you must have cookies, buy the ones that come in prepackaged servings. Several cookie makers are now using healthier fats, so read the labels.
If you a potato chip junkie (like I am), buy the brand that has "no preservatives" on the label. You can also buy low-fat and no salt chips.
If you have not totally eliminated dairy (which I recommend), low-fat cheese could be eaten.
If you must have dessert, go for low-fat and low-sugar.
If you just want a taste of something sweet, reach for the honey. It not only tastes good, it has many health benefits.
Popcorn is a good snack, (but high in starch) if it is cooked the old-fashioned way, over the burners of the stove. Microwave popcorn has radiation from the microwave, plus unhealthy fats. The newest research also suggests that some chemicals from the bag leech into the popcorn. If you must buy microwave popcorn (but please don't), check the labels and buy the lowest fat.
Check out the snacks at the health food stores. Some supermarkets now have health food sections. I personally like totilla chips with few perservatives and sea salt.
