Alexander the Great
Philip II was king
Of Macedonia and then Greece.
Under his leadership
His people lived in peace.
When Philip II was murdered
The new king would be his son.
At twenty years of age
An empire was begun.
Alexander was a mighty leader.
The world he wanted to rule.
Aristotle had been his teacher
When he went to school.
So he valued the Greek culture
And wanted to set it free.
First he conquered the Persians
And the ancient Greek cities.
As his empire grew
New cities did he build.
He called many Alexandria
In honor of how he lived.
He also conquered Asia Minor,
Mesopotamia and Egypt.
Then he left for India,
But his armies, they did quit!
Bitterly disappointed
Back to Babylon he fled.
Within a few months
Alexander the Great was dead.
What happened to this great leader
Is still a mystery.
But Alexander left a legacy
For all the world to see.

Confucius
As a Chinese philosopher
Born in 551 B.C.,
Confucius felt that rulers
Should be kind for all to see.
He also thought that parents
Should be treated with respect,
And by studying filial piety
People could become loyal subjects.
Known as China's first teacher,
His sayings were collected.
Even today as we do read them
Our hearts are still affected.
For the words of Confucius
Are as relevant today,
As they were in 479 B.C.
When Confucius passed away.
